The Pitch at OS
Pat Nevin on 5 live during the commentary tonight - the OS pitch is 5m longer and (probably more importantly) 4m wider than the Boleyn was.

Seems the stats show we press much less effectively on a bigger pitch and better quality teams use the space much more effectively than we do.

No I'm not having that Martin samuel's said it's nothing to do with it... I mean the club even front paged the article...

Maybe we should train and learn how to play on a bigger pitch?

Re: The Pitch at OS
What about the away games we've won on pitches this size then?

I would say the away friendly nature of the fans being fucking miles away has more impact than the standard premier league pitch size.

Re: The Pitch at OS
We've gone from the smallest pitch to the 4th biggest in the league. We should make it smaller but the Trouble is if we make it much smaller we'll be able to fit 2 pitches in and ground will look like a Sunday league park.

We can't reduce it as they'll be even further away

Re: The Pitch at OS
I seem to remember reading somewhere that we couldn't make it smaller even if we wanted to because it has to be regulation size. Pitches less than regulation size are at grounds where they can't be made bigger due to the fact that they are older grounds without the space to increase the size up to regulation, like the Boleyn was.

Said this tonight, MCFC loved that space as did Arsenal. Works for teams like them and MCFC have scored 9 goals in 4 weeks without breaking sweat. We're not that shit at all, but it's a factor that it's a huge change.

Training session against a team like them and 14 fucking goals.

It may be 5m longer...but it is supposedly Premier Standard Width...same as UP...

Re: The Pitch at OS
This has already been discussed re: pitch size.

Man City used the size of the pitch very well tonight. Dragged us all over the place- especially wide- and took advantage of the gaps they opened up.

Re: The Pitch at OS
All season we have struggled to adapt our game on the bigger pitch and teams who play quick, counter attacking football have torn us apart from Southampton early on to Man City tonight.

The transfer policy in the summer needs to reflect that we need athletes who can get up and down the pitch and some pace so we too can play better counter attack. We have already drummed out the likes of Tore & Zaza who appeared lazy playing on a bigger playing area and too often Payet failed to put a shift in before he fucked off.

Unfortunately I think the likes of Noble and Kouyate have struggled to be 'box to box' midfielders because of how much further they have to run compared to Upton Park, so I can see us reverting to more defensive midfielders and more pace up front to make it work.

To be honest, I'm surprised Bilic and Tony Henry didn't make more of this with the recruitment last summer because they knew the pitch was bigger. Other teams have taken advantage of it much more than we have.

What worries me is players saying that the pitch plays slow. That seems to be really working against us.

Re: The Pitch at OS
It's going to be harder to contain expansive attacking sides (e.g. Man City & Arsenal) on a bigger pitch.

According to Wikipedia our current pitch size is 115 x 74 yards, whereas Upton Park was 110 x 70 yards, so 5 Live were almost right.

Re: The Pitch at OS
The OS pitch is too big now??
I don't buy that for a minute,if you even a pitch out from the centre circle by width and breadth it makes very little difference.
I know and understand the players are miles fitter now ,but a few feet here and there shouldn't make any warrented excuses.
You'll never hear a manager winning away from home moaning about a pitch being the wrong size.
Load of bollocks!

We aren't fit enough and have technique that beggars belief. Address this before we blame the sodding pitch.

Re: The Pitch at OS
Slow players. No pace or simply not good enough. That's why we are looking shit.

Re: The Pitch at OS
Seems a pretty feeble excuse to me. If other side's can play on it then so should we
We have conceded the midfield, looking totally overrun since halfway through last season
Either the players are too slow, not fit enough, not eager enough or the tactics are wrong (or a combination of all these things)
We seem incapable of pressing further up the pitch in the way BFS had us doing (with worse players!)
But worst of all we don't seem to be able to string more than a couple of passes together without giving the ball away cheaply
That isn't acceptable at any level in the professional game & it's largely down to poor training/coaching

same width as Palace and we did ok on that one
